I paint LIVE every other Wednesday on the DIY Paint facebook page (you can watch the live videos for this project here and here). I enjoy painting live for a number of reasons- connection, community, accountability among them. Sometimes a project comes together quickly. I have an idea, I start the project, I paint part of it during a live Facebook presentation and then I’m super motivated to get it finished.

Then there are projects such as this one. I hand an idea, started the project live during a Facebook presentation and then second guessed myself and lost all motivation to continue. I recognize it’s all part of the creative process but it’s also frustrating when your creative process is your job.

So this cabinet sat in my kitchen area, on a drop cloth, partially painted for a couple weeks. I went on to finish another project or two but this one was right in the middle of my home begging me to be finished.

I dug deep, pushed the nagging doubt aside and resolved to finish it up. I knew I had a responsibility to those viewers who watched the Facebook live and were expecting to see the finished project. And if I didn’t deliver a finished project in a relatively decent amount of time, what kind of message does that send to my followers and potential clients? Not a good one.

Every once in a while I have that project where I reach that point of no return. I’m too far into the process to start over and yet can’t see clearly where the project will end up. It happens. I just have to trust the process, trust the product and most importantly, trust myself.
