As I write this, parts of the world are still practicing social distancing and isolation. Our own country while still suffering through Covid restrictions is now witness to burning cities and mass protests. It’s scary, uncertain and I’m suffering all kinds of mixed emotions.
I didn’t decide to makeover my master bedroom on account of boredom or a disregard for the terribly uncertain times through which we are living. I had begun the transformation just before the bloom of the global pandemic. We were supposed to move. Big move. Overseas move. So in an effort to get our home “market ready”, a few things needed to happen. First on the list was our master bedroom.
We have lived in our home for 12 years and had not ever painted most of the rooms. The walls were Sherwin Williams Blonde (a goldish beige) when we moved in. That color had served us just fine. But it was tired. Not to mention we have a rather large dog who has claimed the master bedroom as his kingdom.
I had long desired an accent wall in our master so I grabbed life by the horns and went for it. YOLO! I chose Sherwin Williams Iron Ore which is a dark almost black for the wall behind our bed. For the rest of the walls I chose Sherwin Williams Shoji White which in the room with the Iron Ore comes off as a pale grayish white. I decided to paint the fireplace trim also in Iron Ore to help tie in that rather large accent wall (it spans the entire length of the room).
Since the walls are rather serious, I chose lots of bright color for the bedding, artwork and decor. Every piece of furniture in the room was thrifted. The artwork is either thrifted or made by me and a couple pieces I purchased from an artist friend. The only two items I splurged on are the drapery (which I am obsessed with!) from West Elm and the lampshades from Anthropologie. The pair of vintage brass lamps I scored while surfing the bins at the Goodwill Outlet months and months ago when humans were allowed to do such things. The pair was less than 10 bucks so I didn’t mind splurging on the shades a little.
The pillows are mostly clearance from Tuesday morning, except the embroidered pillow which I ordered from Debi’s Design Diary’s new website DIYaGoGo. You can order the pillow here.
I’m very happy with the way this makeover turned out. I’m not an interior decorator. I’m just a homeowner with a love of color who wanted a happy place to escape the troubled world from time to time. As it turns out, that big overseas move isn’t happening any more. And so our home isn’t going on the market… at least in the immediate future. So while I’m immensely disappointed, the silver lining is I have the opportunity to enjoy my master bedroom makeover for a little while longer.
